What do international couples need to know about marrying in Bern?

Both of you must be at least 18 and have capacity of judgement. If one of you is not a Swiss citizen, that person must prove lawful residence in Switzerland for the preparation period and up to the ceremony. You book the preparation procedure and the ceremony by phone with the civil registry office for your place of residence, no earlier than one year ahead. Both of you attend the preparation with a passport or identity card. Bring two adult witnesses with capacity of judgement who can show a passport or identity card; a foreign residence permit is not enough. Saturday weddings are possible in all seven civil registry districts of the canton, in the ceremony room of the respective office; the Saturday dates for 2026 and 2027 are published online.
