How do you book a civil wedding date in the City of Zurich?

If at least one of you lives in the City of Zurich and you both hold a Swiss passport, the city describes these steps:

• Choose your wedding venue and date on the city website. Bookings open no earlier than 12 months in advance.
• No earlier than 3 months before the wedding you receive an email inviting you to marriage preparation, and you pick a slot online.
• Marriage preparation takes place at the counter in the Stadthaus and must be completed at least 1 month before the wedding, otherwise the booking is cancelled.
• Two adult witnesses with capacity of judgement must attend. The documents you ordered, such as the family record and marriage certificate, are handed over at the wedding.

Without a Swiss passport, or if you live outside the Canton of Zurich, you need to submit documents. After you send the contact form, the office tells you by email within a week which ones. They must reach the Zurich civil registry office at least two months before the wedding and must not be older than six months when you submit them.

What are the rules for a ceremony at the Zurich Stadthaus?

Rice, confetti and similar items are not allowed in the Stadthaus, and the city asks you not to throw them outside either. Balloons are banned inside for safety reasons. Because the Stadthaus is open to everyone, hold your apéro outside or somewhere else. There are two parking spaces reserved for couples, and they fill up quickly; the city recommends coming by tram or bus.

Only interpreters recognised by the High Court (Obergericht) of the Canton of Zurich may translate the ceremony. You state your preferred language when you book online.

For your photos, this means planning the exit from the Stadthaus and a nearby spot for group pictures with your photographer, rather than relying on confetti.

What fees apply to a civil wedding in Zurich?

According to the city, the least expensive option is a wedding at the Stadthaus, from CHF 255 including marriage preparation and without translation. Costs depend on the venue, the language and the documents you order. At the civil registry office you only pay the official fees; room hire and services such as flowers, drinks or food are paid to the venue. The city names the Widder Hotel and Zurich Zoo as examples of such venues.
