Wedding photographer St. Gallen: where can you have a civil ceremony in the city?

The regional civil registry office of St. Gallen lists three ceremony venues in the city, each with its own schedule:

• Ceremony room in the town hall (Rathaus): usually on Thursdays and Fridays, on other weekdays on request. Also possible on set Saturdays between 8.30 and 11.00 am.
• Bürgerratssaal in the Stadthaus: on certain Friday afternoons. Only couples where at least one partner lives in the city of St. Gallen or is a citizen of the city can book it.
• Tröckneturm in the Burgweier area: on selected Friday afternoons.

When planning with your photographer, the time of day matters most: Saturday ceremonies are in the morning, while the Bürgerratssaal and the Tröckneturm are on Friday afternoons. That decides how much time is left for couple portraits before and after the ceremony.

What booking deadlines apply for the ceremony and your St. Gallen wedding photographer?

You book two appointments: the marriage preparation procedure and the ceremony itself. You can reserve the ceremony by phone no earlier than six months before your chosen date, provided you are fully registered in the Swiss civil register. For the Bürgerratssaal and the Tröckneturm, the office recommends booking exactly six months ahead.

Swiss couples send the required documents by post no earlier than three months before the wedding. If at least one of you holds a foreign nationality, contact the office at least six months in advance. After the preparation procedure, the ceremony must take place within three months, either in St. Gallen or in another Swiss municipality.

You can contact photographers earlier than that. You will only know the exact time once the ceremony is booked, though, so it makes sense to settle both in quick succession.

Which municipalities belong to the St. Gallen civil registry district?

Besides the city, the regional civil registry office also covers Degersheim, Eggersriet, Häggenschwil, Muolen and Wittenbach. If one of you lives in one of these municipalities, you can marry locally, always on a Friday afternoon:

• Degersheim: municipal hall or the Raiffeisen vaulted cellar
• Eggersriet: municipal hall
• Häggenschwil: municipal hall or the "Bären"
• Muolen: municipal hall
• Wittenbach: municipal hall or Schloss Dottenwil

What surcharges does the city of St. Gallen list?

The city charges extra for some days and venues: CHF 275 for a Saturday ceremony, CHF 80 for the Bürgerratssaal and CHF 200 for the Tröckneturm, which goes to the Tröckneturm foundation.
